Crested Guardian Policies

MISSION STATEMENT

MISSION: Crested Guardians, Inc. is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue of regional, national and international Chinese Crested Breed dogs in need and matching each with appropriate and responsible owners.
With over fifty years of combined experience in rescuing Chinese Crested dogs, Crested Guardians is a group of dedicated volunteers living across the United States who work together to preserve and protect Chinese Cresteds in need.   It is our mission to make a positive change in the lives of unwanted or abandoned Chinese Crested dogs through transporting, fostering, nurturing, socializing, providing medical care and professional positive-reinforcement based training.   The ultimate goal of Cresteds Guardians is to place each rescued Crested into a loving forever home.

Goals & Objectives:

MEMBERSHIP: Recognize that a sustainable dog rescue program cannot exist without the cooperation and efforts of volunteers.

  • All volunteers must be treated with respect, and encouraged to participate according to their interests and strengths.
  • Volunteer education and training should be ongoing to enable the sharing of tasks.
  • Volunteers in charge of identified tasks will be given autonomy to complete those tasks, within the context of any policies developed by the group as a whole.
  • Information and resources will be shared among interested volunteers.
  • Volunteers will be encouraged to reach out and work with other rescue and animal welfare organizations on behalf of Crested Guardians, Inc.

RESCUE: Prevent the euthanasia of any dog which can be matched with an appropriate home.
  • Develop foster homes for dogs entering our program.
  • Accept adoptable dogs from any animal welfare organization or surrendering owner within the region.
  • Provide advice, training and instruction to owners of dogs with correctable behavior problems. Encourage owners to spay/neuter their dogs to prevent the need for a new placement.
  • Ensure our dogs receive superior health care, spay/neuter if needed, prior to placement.
  • Evaluate the temperament of potential dogs coming into our program to ensure that appropriate matches can be made.

PLACEMENT: Provide the best quality, most responsible home for each individual dog.

  • Ensure our dogs are in homes that will provide a safe environment with sufficient amounts of attention and interaction. Our dogs are members of the family, not just pets.
  • Our dogs will stay in foster care until we find a home that is a good match.
  • Each prospective applicant will be interviewed and a home visit will be conducted before the adoption of our dogs.
  • Ongoing contact will be maintained with new homes to ensure permanent placement and to assist the dog and owners with adjusting to each other.
